Department of Management

Dr. Ibekwe Wechie

The Current Head of Department

Management

The Management Programme has been the pillar of the former Department of Business Administration.  It shared accommodation in that department with the Marketing and Banking and Finance Programmes at one time and later with Marketing and Mass Communication Programmes.

The Department of Business Administration itself came into being with the establishment of the College of Science and Technology, the fore-runner of the Rivers State University of science and Technology in 1980.  The Management Programme has made a strong impact in the Faculty of Management Sciences, in the University as a whole, and in the business environment, as it has graduated many able technocrats and produced many who are presently in academia and politics.  It has also produced six Professors and many Ph.D holders in the field who are incontestable international scholars.  The University has for long recognized the need to have a full fledged Department of Management.  This expected hope became a reality from the 2002-2004 Academic session.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

The Department of Management is designed to equip graduates with the relevant management theories, practices, knowledge, abilities and skills that will prepare them for meeting the challenges and opportunities inherent in the management of all kinds and sizes of organizations in any part of the world.

In order to achieve this, the programme also utilizes case study analysis to practicalize the application of theories, concepts and frameworks to real life scenarios.  This is done in consideration of the reality that course content and curriculum should be a reflection of real-life situations and issues, so students need to be prepared for a life outside the classroom.

OBJECTIVE

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • Provide basic knowledge needed for an understanding and analysis of problems related to the management of both profit and non-profit organizations.
  • Equip students of Management with requisite skills for both national and organizational advancement.
  • Train students on how to identify external factors that influence the performance of organization.
  • Acquaint students with contemporary thoughts and theories of Management, especially in terms of how they impact organizational performance.
  • Propagate the development of management thought and its application to the solution of contemporary problems of organizations.
